My cake layers slid apart at a party in Boise

I was bringing a three layer chocolate cake to a friend's birthday last weekend. I used a buttercream that was way too soft because my kitchen was warm. Halfway through the drive, I heard a soft thump and looked back to see the whole top layer had slid off onto the side of the box. I had to pull over and basically mush it all back together with my hands. Has anyone else had a frosting disaster because of the heat?

My cousin's wedding cake in Phoenix did the same slow-motion slide last summer. Soft buttercream and heat are a brutal combo for layer cakes. That mushing-it-back-together feeling is a special kind of kitchen panic.
