PSA: TIG welding that 3/4 inch plate versus stick welding it

Did a repair on a boiler header in Toledo last month, and the TIG root pass took half the time and left zero slag to clean. Anyone else made that switch for thick pressure work?

Wait, you did a TIG root on three quarter inch plate? How did you even get enough heat in there without preheating for a week? That sounds like a nightmare to control.
