My book club debates used to be about themes and foreshadowing, now it's all about representation
Back in 2015, our group would argue about whether the author's use of weather actually meant something or if it was just filler. These days, every single meeting someone brings up how a character's background does or doesn't line up with the author's identity. We spent 40 minutes last Tuesday debating a single paragraph about a minor character's cultural references. I get why it matters, but I miss when we could just talk about the plot without fact checking everything. Has anyone else seen their club shift like this, or is my group just getting more serious?

That whole "40 minutes on a single paragraph" thing hit home hard. My group had a similar meltdown last month over a fantasy book where the author described a feast and someone went on a rant about how the fruit choices didn't make sense for the climate of the fictional region. We ended up pulling up maps and historical trade routes on our phones, completely ignoring that the main character was supposed to be on a quest. I miss when our biggest debate was whether the red herring was too obvious.

Nah, @wren301, that's the fun part - worldbuilding debates are way better than plot chases anyway.
