My book club debates used to be about themes and foreshadowing, now it's all about representation
Back in 2015, our group would argue about whether the author's use of weather actually meant something or if it was just filler. These days, every single meeting someone brings up how a character's background does or doesn't line up with the author's identity. We spent 40 minutes last Tuesday debating a single paragraph about a minor character's cultural references. I get why it matters, but I miss when we could just talk about the plot without fact checking everything. Has anyone else seen their club shift like this, or is my group just getting more serious?
