Noticed our book club spent 30 minutes arguing about a single pronoun in chapter 4 last night

We were discussing 'The Night Circus' and someone insisted the author used 'they' on purpose for a secondary character. But I checked my copy from the library in Portland and it's actually a typo across three printings. It turned into this huge debate about author intent versus editorial mistakes. Has anyone else run into this kind of distraction during a meeting where the real discussion gets derailed?

@robinl90 I gotta push back a little here. Sure, three printings with the same typo sounds like a mistake, but think about it - why would the author or editor let it slide that many times if it meant nothing? Maybe the "typo" is just a cover story for something intentional, like testing how readers react to a gender-neutral character.

Pretty sure that's a known printing error, not intentional.
