Our book club debate about character deaths got way too heated last Tuesday

Three of us nearly stopped talking after someone argued that a minor character's death was 'lazy writing' and the author didn't earn it... it just felt personal all of a sudden. The person who wrote the book is actually in our club, so things got awkward real fast. How do you guys handle it when a debate turns into something that feels like an attack on someone's taste?

Wait, the author is actually sitting there while people call their work lazy? That's a whole different level of awkward, lol. I feel like when a book hits close to home like that, it's easy to forget there's a real person behind the words who probably put a lot of thought into that death scene. Maybe next time, try framing it as "I would have liked more buildup" instead of calling it lazy, because that's a direct jab at the author's effort. Death scenes are tough to pull off, and even minor characters can feel like a gut punch if the reader has a personal connection to something similar in their own life. Honestly, it sounds like your club needs a soft rule about critiquing the work, not the writer's choices, especially when the writer is in the room.

Totally agree with you on that. Getting to hear the author's thought process is honestly a privilege, not the time to start throwing around words like "lazy" right in front of them. It's like forgetting there's a real human on the other side of the page who probably agonized over that exact moment. A little bit of tact goes a long way in those settings.
