Our club read 'Project Hail Mary' and the ending split us right down the middle

I was the one who suggested it, thinking the science stuff was cool (and it was), but the final choice Rocky makes had half of us in tears and the other half, like my friend Carla, calling it a total cop-out. We spent our whole meeting in Portland last Tuesday just going back and forth on it. Has anyone else's group had a big fight over an ending that was supposed to be happy?

Endings that ask for a big personal sacrifice always do that. You see it with movies too, where the hero has to give up their normal life to save everyone. Some people find it beautiful, others just get mad at the wasted chance for a happy ending. It's the same argument every time.

Feel you on that, diana_bell74. Honestly, those endings just leave me sad for the character's lost future. It feels less like beauty and more like a gut punch every single time.

Remember our book club reading "The Giver" years back. We had a screaming match in a quiet coffee shop over whether Jonas and Gabriel actually made it to Elsewhere or just died in the snow. Two people almost left the group for good.
