I spent $75 on a 'rare' orchid from a roadside stand near Tampa

The seller swore it was a specific hybrid, but after a month it was clear it was just a common grocery store type. I felt pretty silly for not checking the roots and flower structure first (they can look similar when not in bloom). Has anyone else gotten tricked by a plant seller like that, and how do you check before you buy?

My buddy had a cactus he named Steve for ten years. When it finally died he was weirdly sad for a week. Turns out you get attached to anything you take care of that long.
