My grandpa was right about waiting until May to plant tomatoes

He always told me not to put them in the ground before Mother's Day here in Ohio, but I thought I knew better. Planted 12 beefsteak seedlings on April 20th last year and we got a late frost that killed all but 3 of them. Had to drive all the way to the nursery in Lancaster to replace them and they were picked over by then. Anyone else have a family member who gave gardening advice you ignored and regretted?

Damn, yeah. My uncle swore by planting on Cinco de Mayo and I lost half my peppers last year too.

Damn, hearing that makes me want to throw my hands up. Your uncle sounds like he was dead set on that date, and it totally backfired. I can't believe he stuck to it year after year even after losing half the plants. Maybe the frost just didn't care about tradition, you know? I'm still picking up the pieces from my own garden disasters last spring.
