Visited the old botanical garden in Birmingham and noticed the rose beds are half the size they were 10 years ago

They replaced them with some modern drought-resistant stuff that looks fine but nothing beats that heavy rose smell on a June morning, anyone else seeing public gardens trimming down the classics?

Are they replacing the roses with stuff the public actually asked for or just following some grant-funded trend?

Your guess is as good as mine @reeseanderson. Probably some grant thing where they gotta plant "native pollinator habitats" or whatever. Next thing you know we'll get a patch of wild onions and a single sad milkweed instead of the roses. Remember when they tried those "drought resistant" succulents last year? Looked like a parking lot landscaping disaster. People just want flowers that actually smell like something, not a science experiment.
