Watched a Denver coffee shop swap its hand painted sign for a neon one and the regulars vanished in 6 weeks
There was a shop near me on South Pearl that had this crooked hand painted sign with a little coffee cup on it for something like 9 years. Last spring the new owner paid around $4,000 to rip it out and put up a shiny neon version with a cursive font that honestly looks like every other spot downtown. Within about 6 weeks the morning crowd thinned out, and one guy who used to come daily told me it felt like a chain now so he walked two blocks further to the old diner. The weird part is the coffee never changed, just the outside look. Has anyone seen a small place lose its regulars over one rebrand like that?
Did the owner ever admit he screwed up? A bagel place by me did the same thing, traded its faded yellow awning for a black modern one and lost half its morning crew in two months. People get attached to the look of a spot, and when you strip that away they just feel like they lost their place.
