My dried beans took forever to soften, like a full 12 hours.
I tried to make a cheap pot of black beans from a bag I had in the pantry for months, but they just would not get tender no matter how long I simmered them. I finally read that old beans can take ages, so I soaked them overnight and then cooked them for almost the whole next day. Anyone have a good trick for testing if beans are too old before you start cooking?

Soaking won't fix old beans, that's the real issue.

Remember my buddy who tried to make beans from a forgotten pantry bag? Soaked them for two days straight. Cooked them forever. Still like little rocks. Had to toss the whole pot. That's how you learn the age thing the hard way.
