Popped into a discount grocery in Toledo and scored a 5-pound bag of onions for 99 cents

Found a whole section of ugly produce that got marked down 60% just because the peppers had weird spots, and now I'm planning a big batch of chili for under 3 bucks total, has anyone else hit up those discount chains for meal deals?

I got a 10 pound box of slightly bruised tomatoes at Aldi for $1.50 last week, made like 4 quarts of marinara for next to nothing. Those discount chains are legit if you don't mind sorting through stuff.

Sorting through stuff" is doing a lot of work there. I went to Aldi once for a deal like that and half the box was basically mush. You ended up with four quarts, but how much time did you spend cutting out bad spots? I guess if you have a free afternoon it's worth it, but $1.50 for ten pounds is still a risk.
