Hostel vs Couchsurfing in Barcelona - one was way cheaper and better

I did both on my last trip to Barcelona in March. Hostels cost me like 35 euros a night for a shared room with 8 people. Couchsurfing was free and I ended up staying with a local who showed me all the cheap tapas spots near Gracia. Made me think, has anyone else found Couchsurfing to actually be more reliable than hostels or did I just get lucky?

Read in a travel blog that most Couchsurfing hosts in Barcelona are younger locals who actually want to hang out, while hostel staff are just doing a job. Sounds like you got the real deal.

Did you get lucky or is Couchsurfing just better in cities with good public transit? I did both in Barcelona too and my hostel was loud and kinda dirty. The Couchsurfing host let me use their kitchen and told me which beaches to skip. Hostels are fine if you just need a bed, but Couchsurfing gives you a real local experience.

Hostels are fine for crashing, but people make Couchsurfing sound like some life changing experience when really it's just free lodging with a guy who might be weird. You got lucky with a good host, not every free bed comes with a personal tour guide and tapas secrets.
