My big mistake with the airport shuttle in Denver

I landed in Denver last month and just grabbed the first shuttle I saw to my hotel downtown. It cost me $45 for a 20 minute ride. The next morning, I found out the city's public train goes from the airport to the same area for only $10.50. I felt so dumb for not checking first. Has anyone else got a story about getting ripped off right when you land in a new city?

Remember that Rome taxi story from @ninat55? Makes me wonder if airports just bank on our tired confusion. That Denver train is a total lifesaver once you know it exists. What did that taxi driver in Rome try to charge you?

Ugh, did he try the flat rate scam or the broken meter trick? Classic move. Always ask for the fixed fare to the city center before you even get in the cab, it's like 50 euros. Honestly, I just take the Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino now, way less stress. Saves you from that whole mess when you're jet-lagged and just want to get to your hotel.
