Pro tip: always check the fine print on those 'free' walking tours
In Budapest two years ago, I joined one that ended with the guide demanding a 20 euro 'mandatory tip' per person in a crowded square. We had to awkwardly shuffle away while he shouted after us. Has anyone else found a good way to vet these tours beforehand?

My friend got roped into one that ended at his cousin's overpriced souvenir shop.

I always look up the tour company on TripAdvisor and read the one-star reviews first. That's where you'll see the real complaints about hidden fees or pushy guides. The free tours that are actually good usually have a clear policy online about tips being optional. I also avoid any that meet in a super crowded tourist spot, that's where the high-pressure stuff seems to happen.
