My brother-in-law told me my 'envelope system' was a waste of time at a family cookout last summer.

He saw me putting cash in labeled envelopes for my car insurance and groceries. He laughed and said, 'Why not just use a card and track it in an app? That's so much work for nothing.' I tried to explain that physically seeing the money leave my hand stops me from overspending at the store. He just shrugged and said it was an old person thing. But I started with nothing, and this is the only way I've ever been able to save. Has anyone else had someone not get your system, even when it works for you?

Is it that deep though? It's just a different way to pay for stuff. If an app works for him and your envelopes work for you, who cares.

My uncle said the same thing about my budget binder. He called it a stone age spreadsheet. But handing over a fifty from my "Eating Out" envelope at the pizza place hits different than a tap. That tap feels like fake money. The envelope is REAL. When it's empty, I'm done. His app might work for his brain, but my brain needs the paper and the panic.

Your uncle's wrong, @ninam86, the envelope method is just a solid tool that works.
