My sink blew a pipe at 2am and that $50 emergency fund I had saved me from a $200 plumber call

I used to think having a separate 'oh no' fund was dumb. Then last Tuesday I woke up at 2am to water spraying from under my kitchen sink in my apartment in Denver. I shut off the main valve, grabbed my phone, and remembered I had $50 set aside just for stuff like this. I called a 24/7 plumber and the dispatch fee was exactly $50. He came out, tightened a fitting, and charged me nothing extra. If I hadn't had that cash, I would've been stuck waiting until morning with no water. Has anyone else had a random $50 bill save their night?

Oh, sure, because nothing says "good life decision" like waking up to a fountain in your kitchen at 2am. My emergency fund is currently a jar of quarters I keep for laundry, which would probably get me a stern talking-to from the plumber at that hour. I'm just waiting for the day my water heater gives out and I have to explain to someone in coveralls that my "savings" are mostly in the form of loose change and a half-eaten bag of pretzels.
