Warning: My friend told me my 'fun money' line was a total trap
We were looking at my budget and she pointed out my $200 'fun money' category was just a black hole for impulse buys... she said, 'You're just giving yourself permission to waste cash.' I changed it to specific categories like 'eating out' and 'hobbies' with set amounts. Last month, I put $40 from the old fun money into a car repair fund instead. It covered half a new tire when I needed it. Has anyone else had a budget category that was secretly working against them?

Oh totally, my "entertainment" fund was the same way! It was just a catch-all for random streaming services and buying video games I never played. I split it into "movies out" and "games" and suddenly had an extra $50 last month that went straight into my vacation savings.

Honestly, I used to swear by my "miscellaneous" cash buffer for the same reason. Tbh it just became a sneaky excuse for dumb little Amazon orders I forgot about two days later. Breaking it down like you did into real things I actually do, like coffee or my knitting stuff, made me actually think before spending. Seeing that extra cash go toward something useful, like your tire fund, totally changed my mind on how I set things up now.

Forget breaking everything down, that just makes budgeting a full time job. A simple buffer keeps things flexible for real life without overthinking every penny. Sometimes a vague category is the smartest way to handle random small costs.
