Choosing between a custom closet system and a simple shelving unit for my home office

I redid my home office in Portland and had to pick between a full custom closet system from a local shop and a basic Ikea shelving unit. I went with the custom option, which cost about $800, because I needed specific storage for art supplies and drafting tools. The install took two full days, but now everything has a perfect spot. Has anyone else done a custom storage build for a creative workspace and have tips on keeping it flexible?

Honestly, that sounds like a huge commitment. I get needing specific storage, but locking everything into a custom setup from the start makes me nervous. My needs change every few months with new projects. I used a basic shelving unit and a bunch of those clear plastic bins I can just relabel and move around. Spending that much time and money on something fixed feels like it could really backfire later when you want to change the room around.

It's funny how this storage debate pops up everywhere, from kitchens to garages. People seem to either want a perfect, permanent spot for everything or need the freedom to change things on a whim. I've seen friends get really stressed trying to plan for every future need, when sometimes a good, simple base you can tweak is less headache.
