Just found out the standard kitchen counter depth is a lie
I was redoing my sister's kitchen in Tacoma and we ordered a new countertop. The spec sheet said 25 inches deep, standard. When it showed up, it was 24.5. I called the fabricator ready to fight, and he calmly told me that's normal. The 'standard' 25 inches includes a 1.5 inch overhang at the front, so the actual cabinet box top is only 23.5 inches, and they add an inch for the backsplash lip. My mind was blown. I've been in this business for a decade and always worked off the 25 inch number for planning. It explains why some appliances felt too tight. I found this out the hard way when our new fridge almost didn't fit. Has anyone else run into this and had to adjust their cabinet plans last minute?

Hold up, you said the cabinet box top is 23.5 inches. That's not right either. The standard base cabinet box is 24 inches deep. The 25 inch counter comes from that 24 inch box, plus a 1 inch backsplash lip. The front overhang is extra, it hangs past the cabinet door. So your counter is 24.5 because they used a 24 inch cabinet and a half inch overhang, not a full inch. That's why your fridge was tight. You planned for the wrong cabinet depth from the start.

Man, @the_tyler, does that kind of mix-up happen to everyone on their first kitchen?

Oh wow, this is such a common trap. I read a whole article about kitchen planning mistakes, and wrong cabinet depth was the number one issue for DIYers. People see the finished counter depth and forget about the box behind it. Your math gets thrown off by an inch or two, and suddenly nothing fits right. It's exactly like Tyler said, that overhang isn't part of the cabinet box measurement. That article saved me from making the same error in my own place.
