My custom bookshelf sagged after 4 months, here's what I missed

I built a wall unit out of pine boards back in March for my living room in Austin. The shelves were 36 inches wide and I used 3/4 inch material, thought that would be plenty. By July the middle of each shelf had dipped almost half an inch, and my records started sliding off. Turns out I never accounted for the weight of 50 plus vinyl albums sitting in one spot. I added a steel support brace underneath and it fixed the sag overnight. Has anyone else had a project fail because they skipped the load test before committing to a design?
