Unpopular opinion: glossy laminate on dark pin designs is a trap and I learned the hard way
I pressed 50 pins with a black background using glossy laminate for a punk show in Richmond last month, and under the venue lights every pin turned into a mirror, you could not read the band name at all. Matte got me a way cleaner result on the second batch but it scratches if you look at it wrong, so now I'm stuck. Half of me says glossy is fine if you design around the glare, the other half says matte is the only real choice for dark art. What do you all run for dark pins, and do you change your artwork or just eat the scratches?
Had the same thing happen at a show in Baltimore back in March, pressed about 30 pins with black backgrounds and glossy lam and they looked like tiny mirrors under those stage lights. I ended up redoing the whole batch with matte and yeah the scratches are real, I keep them in sleeves now and tell people to be gentle with them. One thing that helped me was adding a thin white outline around the text so even if there is some glare the words still pop. Honestly for dark art I just deal with the matte scratches, a clean readable pin beats a shiny one nobody can read.
