Were they actual silicone filled heat shrink connectors or just the cheap knockoff style? Those discount ones can look good at first but fail fast in real weather exposure. Did you test them with a meter or just trust the visual seal?

The brand that surprised me most was the no-name Amazon ones labeled AWH. I put a pair of those on some exterior landscape lighting last fall and they held up through a whole winter of snow and freeze-thaw cycles without a hiccup. But the same connectors failed within two months on a hose bib timer near the ground where water pooled. I think the real test is whether the heat shrink tubing has actual adhesive lining the whole way through, not just at the ends.
