Bought a $35 lens spanner off eBay and stripped the first screw I touched

The metal was so soft it bent just trying to turn a retainer ring on an old Pentax. Anyone have a brand of cheap spanner that actually holds up?

You're blaming the tool when the real problem was probably technique or the retainer was just seized. A $35 spanner is fine for most jobs if you actually seat the pins properly and apply even pressure. I've used a $20 Amazon special on dozens of lenses including old Soviet stuff and never stripped a screw. Maybe check the pin size match next time.

Check the pin sharpness too, a dull tool will slip no matter how careful you are.
