Update: Pushing for promotions too early set me back
Most advice says to ask for a promotion after a year, but when I did that, it just annoyed my boss and stalled my progress. He said I needed more proof of my skills first, which made the whole thing awkward.

Have you tried asking your boss what proof would look like? I started asking for small, clear projects to own first and that built my case.
