Had to pick between a big text size or adding a text zoom button for a senior center website

I was working on a site for a local senior center in Austin. The choice was setting all the main text at 18px from the start, or keeping it at 16px but adding a clear zoom button. I went with the 18px base size because I thought it was simpler for them. It worked well for most pages, but on the calendar page with lots of dates, the bigger text made the layout look crowded. Has anyone else faced a choice like this between a default setting and a user control?

Rant: I used a piece of bubble gum to fix a coolant line leak for a whole shift

So the main coolant line on our old 2008 Haas VF-2 started spraying a tiny jet right at a fitting last Tuesday, and we were out of the right size hose clamp. I mean, I was desperate, so I grabbed a piece of gum from my pocket, chewed it up real good, and packed it around the leak. It actually held back the spray long enough to finish the run of 50 aluminum brackets. Has anyone else ever used a truly ridiculous temporary fix that actually worked?

I'm about to lose it with these weekend warriors on jet skis right over our job site.

I almost lost a favorite saw to a hidden nail in an old maple.

Was clearing a storm damaged tree from a client's yard yesterday. My saw blade hit something hard and sparked, jamming right up. Turns out there was a long forgotten fence nail grown into the trunk. Had to carefully free the saw and finish by hand, which took hours. But I saved the tool and learned to always scan for metal in older trees.

Vent: Double-clarifying butter feels like overkill

I keep seeing recipes that insist on clarifying butter twice. It takes extra time and burns through product. What's the real benefit here?
