Vent: I almost lost my job over a single email I sent too fast

I was at my desk in the Denver office, finishing a project for a client named 'Alpha Logistics'. I typed up a quick update email and hit send without double checking the recipient list. Turns out I accidentally included a competitor's contact from an old file, sharing our pricing strategy. My manager pulled me aside the next morning. I had to call the client immediately, explain the huge mistake, and offer a major discount to keep them. Has anyone else had to fix a mistake this big with a client?

Ouch, that's a tough one. Did your manager give you any new rules for checking emails before sending them now, or was the apology and discount enough to settle things?

Sending the whole pricing strategy to a competitor is a new level of email fear.

Yeah, I used to think double-checking was overkill until something like that happens, like dixon.nathan said.

Honestly that's the kind of mistake that makes you want to just go live in a cave forever. My new email rule is basically to assume every single person in my contacts list is secretly a corporate spy. The discount probably helped, but I'm pretty sure my boss still pictures my face every time he hears our competitor's new ad jingle.
