Went to a historic barn restoration in Ohio and noticed something wild about the old joinery

The guys 200 years ago used green oak that literally shrank and locked itself together tighter over time. Has anyone else run into this on old structures and tried to reverse-engineer it?

Think that's more about how they worked with moisture than some intentional locking trick.

@margaret_lane you're right that moisture played a big role. But let's be real, those old Egyptians knew what they were doing with braiding and wrapping techniques too. It's not just about the humidity, it's how they layered and protected the hair from the sun. They had methods that basically locked in natural oils and kept everything tight.
