That 30 year veteran told me to quit trimming doorways with a utility knife

Met a guy named Jerry at a supply house in Cleveland last week who said using a hook knife saves 15 minutes per room and I laughed at him until he showed me his finished door casings, has anyone else switched over and actually seen a time difference?

Old Jerry wasn't lying, hook knives are basically witchcraft for door casings and now I feel like I've been doing it wrong for years. Tried one on a scrap piece of primed finger joint and it cut cleaner than my utility knife on a good day. Guess 30 years of experience actually means something, who would've thought.

Funny you mention that hook knife thing. Had a trim carpenter in Akron tell me the same thing and I brushed him off too until I tried one on a closet door jamb and yeah, I was eating my words after that first clean cut. Your mileage may vary but in my experience those hook blades do work better for avoiding chipping on the painted MDF stuff.
