Spent 2 years climbing up to check offsets before I put a dial indicator on the spindle
I always just used the edge finder and trusted my math. Then one day I was fighting a 0.005" offset on a part for like an hour. Boss walked over and put a indicator on the tool holder. Turns out my collet nut was slightly crooked this whole time. Felt like a idiot. Now I clock every tool before I run anything. Anyone else had a simple setup habit waste their time?

Check offsets with a test indicator. That crooked collet nut wastes time for everyone.

Yeah, "wastes time for everyone" is putting it mildly. I've seen guys spend 20 minutes fighting a crooked collet nut only to still end up with a part that's .010 out of round. It's like watching someone try to thread a needle with a rope. Just bite the bullet and sweep the bore with an indicator, it's not that hard.
