Switched from manual offsets to tool presetters 2 years ago

I used to spend 10 minutes dialing in each tool with an edge finder, but after I grabbed a used presetter off Craigslist, I finish setups in like 2 minutes now. Has anyone else made that jump and regretted not doing it sooner?

Check the spindle taper with a test bar when you first get it, that'll tell you if the used one is still square. I ran mine for a year before recalibrating and the max error I saw was 0.0003" across all tools, so it's not something you gotta do every couple months unless you crash it. The used one I grabbed came with no manual, so I just made a master tool on a known holder and zeroed everything off that, works fine. Just keep the presetter clean and don't drop anything on it, and it'll hold up way better than you'd expect.

Oh man, the edge finder dance. Did yours come with a calibration chart or did you have to figure out the table offsets through trial and error? I'm always curious if used presetters hold their accuracy or if you have to re-dial them every few months.

Oh wow, the test bar tip is good to know... I actually just trusted mine from day one and never checked it, probably should have.
