My French press shattered this morning and I'm second-guessing the whole thing

I was making my usual 8am batch in my old Bodum and the glass just cracked when I poured the hot water in, sending coffee and glass everywhere across my kitchen counter. It happened so fast I didn't even drop it, the thermal shock got it right near the bottom. Anyone else switched to a stainless steel press or should I just buy a new glass carafe?

My old Bodum gave out the exact same way last winter. Water around 200 degrees hit that glass just right and it split from the rim to the base. I switched to a stainless steel double walled press from Espro and never looked back. The coffee stays hot way longer and I don't have to worry about breaking another carafe when I'm half asleep in the morning. Only downside is you can't see the brew level but you get used to timing it. If you go stainless just make sure it's insulated so the outside doesn't burn your hand like the cheap ones do.

The Espro is a solid move. That double walled thing really does keep coffee hot way longer than a glass press, especially if you're slow to finish a cup. Only thing is you lose the visual of the brew, but like you said, timing it gets automatic after a week. Some people complain about the metal filter letting more fines through than a mesh, but I never noticed it being a real problem. French press clean up is already a chore, so the stainless just feels more durable for that daily abuse. Once you go metal you won't go back to glass, plain and simple.
