Shoutout to that designer who told me to throw out my color wheel

I was at a coffee shop last Tuesday working on a client's branding, and this older graphic designer just sat down next to me. She looked at my screen and said, "put that wheel away, color is about how it feels not what matches." Then she showed me how she picks palettes based on a single photo she loves, like a sunset or an old movie poster. I tried it that night with a picture of a rusted car, and my whole project popped. Has anyone else ditched the rules and just gone with gut feelings on colors?

Oh cool, now I can blame my bad color choices on a rusted car instead of my own lack of talent.

Gotta respect the honesty @sarah_johnson46, rusty cars are just better scapegoats anyway.
