My buddy said I was overthinking comic book fan meetups, and he was right
I spent two weeks planning a local meetup group for Silver Age collectors in Portland, making name tags and a strict agenda. My friend Dave told me to just pick a coffee shop and let people talk, which I ignored until half the attendees left after 20 minutes. Why do we get so caught up on details when all fans really want is to just hang out and talk comics?

Man, I once went to a Star Wars fan meetup where the organizer had us do a trivia quiz before we could even get coffee. People were sitting there trying to remember what year the original movie came out while their drinks got cold. The whole thing fell apart when some guy started arguing about the scoring system and walked out. All anybody wanted was to talk about Boba Fett and argue about the cantina scene, not fill out a dang test.

A trivia quiz before coffee? That is just cruel and unusual punishment. Who on earth thought that was a good idea? I cannot imagine sitting there with a cold cup of coffee trying to remember what year "A New Hope" came out while people are arguing about scoring systems. That sounds like a nightmare, not a fun meetup. You are right, all anyone wants is to talk about their favorite characters and share memories, not prove how much they know. Some people get so carried away with being "organizers" they forget the whole point is to have a good time together.
