PSA: I keep seeing techs skip the thermal paste check on laptops that just shut down
Had a client in Dayton bring in a gaming laptop that kept powering off under load, and the last shop just swapped the fan without checking the paste (it was basically dust). After a proper clean and repaste, temps dropped 22 degrees and the problem was fixed. How many of you make checking the TIM your first move with thermal shutdowns?

Used to just swap fans myself, got burned bad on a MacBook Pro that had paste like dried glue. Customer came back a week later with the same shutdown issue. Now the first thing I do is pop the heat sink, no matter what the last guy said they did. That crusty paste is way more common than a dead fan in my experience.

That Dayton story is a perfect example of why @the_henry's method is the right call. Skipping the paste check just wastes everyone's time.
