Watching a crew pour a slab last week made me realize most people don't pre-wet the subgrade enough before they start

The concrete dried out way too fast and cracked in three spots because the ground sucked all the moisture out, so does anyone have a good rule for how long to soak the dirt beforehand?

You ever notice how everyone skips the basics because they're in a hurry, but then spend twice as long fixing the cracks later? Same thing happens with wood decks - nobody lets the lumber acclimate before building, then it warps and splits within a year. The ground soaks up moisture like a sponge, so you gotta give it at least a full day of soaking before you pour, preferably with a sprinkler running off and on.

Eh, been doing this 20 years and never pre-wet. Never had a problem.
