Finally got a stubborn color correction right after three tries

I mean, it was a box dye mess on level 5 hair wanting to be a cool ash blonde, which is always a pain. I ended up doing a soap cap with a 10 volume developer and my usual lightener, left it for maybe 8 minutes, and it lifted perfectly without more damage. Anyone have a different method for those tricky at-home color removals?

Glad you found a method that worked. Soap caps can be a real lifesaver for pulling out old dye without a full bleach bath. I've had good luck with a vitamin C powder mixed with clarifying shampoo for a gentler first step, but your result sounds perfect. It's all about avoiding that extra damage when the hair's already been through it.

Exactly, @bettyg93, that careful middle ground is key. It reminds me of fixing other stuff, like when you paint over a wall but need to sand it just enough without wrecking the plaster. Everyone's looking for that sweet spot between getting the job done and not making a bigger mess, hair is just the perfect example.

Oh nice, that's a solid fix... I did almost the same thing last month on my sister's hair, a patchy dark brown box dye. Used a 10 volume with a bit of lightener and a ton of conditioner, kept checking it every five minutes till the orange tone was gone. It's such a relief when it lifts without turning to straw.
