Started rolling dice to pick my story prompts and it broke my 2 year writer's block
I had 14 half finished short stories sitting in a folder on my laptop and I kept opening the same three prompts I always use. So in March I wrote 20 random prompts on index cards, threw them in a coffee mug, and made myself pull one before each writing session, no re-draws. The first card said 'a character who is terrible at their job but loves it' and I finished a 3,000 word story in four days, which is fast for me. Ngl the randomness keeps me from picking the same comfortable ideas, has anyone else tried something like this or do you just power through the list?
Tbh the whole "no re-draws" thing sounds like it would just stress me out and make writing feel like a chore instead of fun. I get that you finished a story in four days, but is that a real fix or just a new trick that'll wear off in a couple months like every other productivity hack? Powering through the list might feel boring, but at least you're building the muscle to write even when you don't feel like it.
