Had to choose between a free VPN and paying for one after my bank flagged a login from another city

Went with the paid NordVPN plan and it's been solid for 6 months, no more weird alerts. Anyone have a good free alternative that's actually safe for checking accounts?

Honestly that's a bit of a blanket statement. Some free VPNs are definitely shady, but not all of them. ProtonVPN's free tier is run by a company with a solid privacy reputation, they don't sell data. It's slower and has fewer servers, but for checking a bank account once in a while it's perfectly safe. The key is picking one with a clear no-logs policy from a trusted source, not just any random free app.

Free VPNs often sell your data, which kinda defeats the whole privacy point.
