Realized my dark mode was just gray mode after a friend squinted at my screen

I was designing a dark theme for a recipe app and thought I had it nailed. Then a buddy tried using it at night and said 'dude, this isn't dark, it's a dim gray' and I saw all my backgrounds were around #2a2a2a instead of true black. Has anyone else missed the mark on what 'dark' actually means in terms of contrast?

oh man i feel this so hard. i remember when i thought i was being all clever with my dark mode settings and it turned out my "dark" was basically just a slightly less bright version of the default gray. like, what even is dark mode anymore if it's not actually dark? it's like calling a slightly cool summer day a blizzard. my friend was nice enough to point it out but i could tell they were trying not to laugh. honestly i think a lot of apps and websites do this same thing now, they think dark gray counts as dark but it really doesn't work for night time reading. maybe we all need to just accept that true dark is #000000 and stop halfway with the grays.

Tbh @luna_wells57 my friend once designed a whole 'dark mode' and it turned out to be like a dusty gray, not even close to black.
