Turned off all my overhead lights after 3 years of bad dark mode
Kept tweaking colors forever but everything still looked washed out. Finally killed the room lights completely and just used a $12 desk lamp pointed at the wall. Fixed all my contrast issues in one night. Anyone else find blackouts help?

Wait, you took three years to figure out that a single desk lamp works better than all your overheads? That's wild. I switched to a similar setup about six months ago when my eyes started hurting from my monitor being too bright. My lamp is a cheap gooseneck thing from Target, and I point it at the beige wall behind my screen, and suddenly everything looks crisp and real.

Right! My neck was killing me before I started doing the same thing. Now I just have a little lamp aimed at the corner of the room and my cheap monitor finally looks good.

Man, that's exactly what I had to do too! I tried every gamma setting and profile I could find online but nothing made my text look not-gray until I just turned off the tube lights above me. Did you have to retrain your eyes at first though? I felt like I was squinting for the first few days before my brain adjusted to the lower ambient light.
