Almost lost a $2000 print job because of a cheap paper supplier

I switched to a discount paper house last month to save on costs for a brochure run and the ink started bleeding through on page 5. Tried adjusting print settings and even swapped stocks but the problem was the paper's coating being way too thin. Anyone else had a supplier swap ruin a job and howd you catch it beforehand?

Did you ask for paper samples before placing the full order? My usual move is to run a test print on a small sheet from any new supplier before committing to a big run. Did the supplier offer any samples or did you just go off the spec sheet?

I used to buy paper for a small print shop and learned that spec sheets always list the bright white value but never mention the actual hand feel until you get a sample in your hands. That textured matte stock could feel like sandpaper compared to what you expected.

Yeah exactly, it's like buying cheap shoes and wondering why your feet hurt.
