Heard a print shop owner say Pantone is dying out
I was picking up some business cards at a shop in Portland last Tuesday and the owner told me most of his clients just pick colors from a screen now... they don't even bother with Pantone swatches. It got me thinking about how much I rely on spot colors for my logo work. Is anyone else seeing this shift away from Pantone in small runs?

My last printer said the same thing. People want cheap CMYK now.

Yeah, "people want cheap CMYK now" is pretty much the curse of anyone trying to do quality print work. I've found the trick is to give them two quotes side by side - one with the budget option and one showing what you actually recommend with a quick breakdown of why it holds up better. Most people will go with the cheap one anyway, but at least you covered yourself when it starts fading in six months.
