Tried printing a photo book with matte paper and got muddy blacks
I finally got around to making a photo book for a trip to Yellowstone last summer. Used a local print shop instead of the big online sites. Went with matte paper because I hate glare, but every dark photo looks washed out and muddy. The blacks are more like dark gray and the details in shadows are just gone. I should have asked for a test print before committing to 60 pages. Has anyone else had this problem with matte versus glossy for photo books?

Matte paper really kills contrast, that's the tradeoff.

Matte doesn't kill contrast if your print shop knows how to handle it. Sounds like they just let their color profile default to something meant for glossy paper.
