Overheard a client say they 'just want it to look clean' before I even showed them my plans

Turns out she meant she wanted bare drywall with no trim or baseboards at all, said it looked 'cluttered' with them. Has anyone else had a customer totally redefine basic terms like that mid-renovation?

I used to think clients just needed better vocabulary, but honestly this changed my mind. I had a guy once tell me he wanted 'modern' and I pictured clean lines and minimalist trim. Showed up with my plan and he meant no trim at all, just caulk where the drywall meets the floor. He said baseboards looked 'busy.' Another time a lady said 'open concept' and she literally wanted no interior doors anywhere, not even the bathroom. I learned to ask for pictures before I start drawing anything now. Your mileage may vary but people have very specific ideas about words like 'clean' and 'simple.'

Wait how many times have you opened a cabinet and found a bathroom door handle inside because the last guy gave up arguing?
