I finally built a pergola, and it's split the block into two camps.
Some neighbors love the shade and style it adds. Others say it's too big and doesn't fit the street's look. What's your take on DIY structures that get everyone talking?

Consider how your pergola might quietly change what people plant in their own yards. Someone who lost a sunny patch for tomatoes might start a shade garden, while a neighbor across the street could finally put in those sun-loving roses they wanted. It's funny how one structure can actually reshape the local gardening plans for years to come, beyond just the argument over how it looks.

When you mentioned it split the block into two camps, I pictured you accidentally starting a cold war over shade. Nothing unites a neighborhood like a common enemy, and in this case, it's your carpentry skills. DIY projects always stir up more drama than a reality TV show, but at least it's free entertainment. If they say it's too big, just claim it's a modern art piece about property lines. The best home improvements are the ones that give people something to judge besides their own choices. You've basically done a public service by giving everyone a new topic for their backyard chats.

My buddy's pergola actually increased his property value by like 5% according to a realtor friend. So the haters might be mad their own house is now worth less by comparison, lmao.
