My neighbor Larry's duct tape fix nearly flooded my basement

Last spring, Larry told me to just use duct tape to patch a small crack in my PVC drain pipe. Said he'd done it a dozen times and it held for years. I figured $4 was cheaper than calling a plumber. Two weeks later, I came home to 3 inches of water in my basement after the tape gave out at 2 AM. The repair cost me $850 in water damage and a new pipe. Anyone else ever trust a neighbor's shortcut and regret it?

honestly not trying to be rude but 3 inches of water doesn't sound like that big a deal, like just mop it up and move on.

3 inches of water in a basement is easily 20-30 gallons or more depending on the size. Did he offer to help pay for any of the cleanup?
