Rant: All the guides say to caulk before painting, but I skip it and my trim looks fine.

I stopped caulking my baseboards before painting them two years ago, and I haven't had a single crack or gap show up yet.

Two whole years with no cracks at all? That seems wild to me. Every house I've lived in shifts enough with the seasons to open up tiny gaps. Maybe you've got some magical, perfectly stable walls.

Tbh, good drainage and stable soil are key. Flexible caulk helps with seasonal movement too.

Check how the house was originally framed too. Some older places were just built WAY more solid from the start, before lumber got all fast-grown and twisty.
