That operator in Corpus who swore by running the pump dry for 10 minutes at end of shift

Met this guy named Ray at a job site near Corpus Christi about 8 months back. He told me he always lets his dredge pump run dry for a full 10 minutes after the last pass to clear out every bit of sand. I laughed it off until my mechanic showed me the wear on my impeller from leftover grit sitting overnight. Has anyone else heard of this trick or is this just some regional thing that kills your seals faster?

Honestly read about this trick in a dredging forum a few years back.

Not everything you read in specialized forums holds up in real world conditions. A lot of those tricks come from people running very specific setups that won't translate to the average person's gear or environment. Hard to take a dredging forum's advice seriously without seeing how it actually performs in your own situation.
